After more than three decades as a speech therapist,ย Michelle Longmuir-Wilkesย has seen many changes in health care. But few have had the kind of impact she recently experienced as a home health speech therapist with OhioHealth at Home in partnership with Compassus in Columbus, Ohio.ย
For years, Michelleโs days looked much like those of many home health clinicians. She would spend her time where it mattered most โ sitting face-to-face with patients, listening to theirย concernsย and guiding them through therapy. Then, after a full day of visits, another shift would begin.ย
โOn an average day, I see five to seven patients,โ Michelle said. โEach visit includes checking medications, vitals, pain levels and working through therapy goals. The visit itself is about 45 minutes, and thenย itโsย time to head to the next home. There reallyย isnโtย time to document everything in between.โย
That often meant Michelle would return home after a full day of patient visits, cook dinner for herย familyย and then spend several more hours completing clinical notes.ย
โYouโre trying to remember everything that happened during the session and capture it clearly,โ she said. โI knew I was providing great therapy, but it was difficult to put it all into the documentation after such a long day.โย
A New Way Forwardย
When Compassus introducedย Nestmed,ย AI-supported documentation technology,ย to clinicians like Michelle, the goal was simple: remove barriers so clinicians could focus on what matters most โ their patients.ย
At first, Michelleย admitsย she was skeptical.ย
โAI can sound intimidating,โ she said. โYou wonder if it might change the way you practice or take away from the skills youโve spent years developing.โย
But afterย giving it a try, Michelle quickly saw the difference.ย
โIt completely changed the game,โ she said. โBecauseย Iโmย talking with patients and families throughout the session, the system captures whatย weโreย doing and helps turn it into clear documentation. It takes so much of the mental load off.โย
Michelle estimates the technology has cut her after-hoursย documentation time by at least half.ย
Putting the Focus Back on Patientsย
For Michelle, the biggest benefitย isnโtย just efficiency.ย Itโsย presence.ย
โAs therapists, we build trust through conversation and connection,โ she said. โPatients can feel it when your attention is divided between them and a computer. We want them to know they have our full focus.โย
With the system capturing much of the session in real time, Michelleย is able toย spend more time doing what she loves most: helping patients.ย
โIt gives me confidence that what happened during the visit is being captured accurately,โ she said. โThen I review it and make sure everything is exactly right.โย
Supporting Care โ Not Replacing Itย
Michelle is quick to point out thatย the technologyย isnโtย replacing clinicians. Instead, it supports them in delivering high-quality care while meeting increasingly complex documentation requirements.ย
โDocumentation has changed a lot in the 30 years Iโve been practicing,โ she said. โWeย have toย clearly showย medicalย necessity for the services we provide. This helps ensureย weโreย capturing those details in a way that supports our patients and the care theyย need.โย
In fact, Michelle says the transition toย the newย technology has been one of the smoothest changes she has experienced in her career.ย
โBy far, this has been the easiest transition overall,โ she said.ย
Time That Matters Mostย
Perhaps theย most meaningful change has been the time Michelle has gained back outside of work.ย
โThere were times I was documenting until after midnight on Sundays just trying to keep up,โ she said.ย
Now, those late nights are far less common.ย
โThis has given me my evenings back,โ she said. โI get to spend more time with my family. My dad is elderly, and nowย Iโmย able to visit him more often. That time is incredibly important.โย
Innovation With Purposeย
As home-based care continues to evolve, Compassusย remainsย committed to exploring innovative ways to support clinicians and strengthen patient relationships.ย
For Michelle, the impact is simple.ย
โThis isnโt about replacing therapists,โ she said. โItโs about helping us be the kind of therapist our patients need us to be.โย
And sometimes, she adds, all it takes isย tryingย it once.ย
โAll it takes is one trial,โ Michelle said. โThen you understand.โย
