This past weekend, I experienced firsthand the impact of what we do at Compassusโand the difference it makes in peopleโs lives.
A dear friend of mine has been caring for her lifelong friend, who has been battling cancer for the past nine months. On Saturday morning, I received an urgent call from her. Hospice had been scheduled through another provider, but due to delays, they werenโt able to come when neededโand her friendโs condition was quickly declining. She asked if I could help, knowing I worked with Compassus.
I immediately reached out to our Columbia, TN team, and within minutes, Director of Clinical Services Morgan Penrod Keeton connected me to Breanna Holt, our Hospice Admission Coordinator. Breanna had me on the phone within three minutes. Even though the patientโs location was outside Williamson Countyโs coverage area, Breanna offered guidance without hesitation. She shared exactly who to call, how to escalate the case and what to ask for to ensure care was provided as quickly as possible.
Thanks to those suggestions and the support from our Columbia team, the patient was seen later that same dayโand peacefully passed the following morning. Because of this intervention, the family will now receive the bereavement support and follow-up care that hospice uniquely provides during this difficult time.
As a member of the communications team, I donโt often witness the clinical side of our mission up close. But in this moment, I saw the true heart of Compassusโteams who respond with urgency, kindness and expertise, even when the case doesnโt directly involve our own service lines.
I am incredibly honored to work alongside people like Morgan, Breanna, and so many others who show every day what it means to care for who people are. This moment will stay with me for a long time.
