Care and compassion are the cornerstones of hospice work. For St. Louis, Missouri-based Compassus hospice teammates Chaplain Dr. Devona Moore, Ph.D., Ed.D., C.C. and Social Worker Tashina Nebedum, MSW, these principles are more than idealsโthey recently became a lifeline for a patient in his final days.
The patient, a man under state guardianship who practiced Islam, was residing in a care facility with no known family or loved ones. His isolation was compounded by a language barrier, as he spoke primarily Bosnian with limited English, requiring consistent use of interpreter services. When it became evident he was nearing the end of life, Devona and Tashina knew a thoughtful plan was needed to honor his cultural and religious beliefs.
The journey was fraught with challenges. Financial limitations meant that the funds available for end-of-life arrangements would not cover anything beyond cremation, which conflicted with his religious customs. Historically, cremation had been the default in such cases, leading to repeated issues for individuals from various faiths whose burial rites differed.
Undeterred, Devona and Tashina collaborated with the patientโs state-appointed guardian, the care facility staff and members of the local Muslim community. Through persistence and partnership, they secured the funding to ensure a proper Muslim burial. In a remarkable turn of events, their efforts also led to locating the patientโs estranged family. His daughter, who had believed her father was lost to her, not only reconnected with him but also found closure. She was able to spend time with him, witnessing the honor and respect given to his cultural and religious beliefs.
The patient passed away shortly after these arrangements were finalized. While their time with him was brief, the impact of Devona and Tashinaโs work extended far beyond. Their actions brought his family peace of mind, restored connections and ensured the patientโs final days were marked by dignity.
Devona and Tashina truly exemplify Compassusโ core values of integrity, teamwork and compassion. They embodied the spirit of hospice by delivering care that respects individual needs and beliefs while providing comfort and solace. Their extraordinary determination and resourcefulness shine as a testament to the principles of understanding and humanity in hospice care.
Thank you to Devona and Tashina for representing the best of Compassus in all that you do.
