Celebrating a Century of Life and Legacy: Marilyn Kutzli Turns 103

Marylin care

At Compassus, every patient’s story is unique and deserving of celebration. That truth was highlighted recently in Davenport, Iowa, where the Compassus team honored hospice patient Marilyn Kutzli on her 103rd birthday. Marilyn’s century-long journey is extraordinary, filled with moments of love, resilience and adventure that have left a lasting impact on everyone fortunate enough to know her.

Born in 1920, Marilyn’s life is a testament to dedication to her family, career and passions. One of the most touching stories she shared was her World War II-era love story. Marilyn eloped with her husband, John, in Missouri before he left to serve in the Army. John was stationed overseas, working on the frontlines to protect vital oil pipelines. When he finally returned to the U.S., Marilyn was asked to meet him at a crowded train station in Illinois. Amid rows of identical green uniforms, finding each other might have been impossible without Marilyn’s bright pink shoes. She had purchased them just before the war and saved them for that moment. Those shoes became the key to their reunion when John spotted her immediately, joyfully saying, “I’m home, and I love your pink shoes!”

After settling down, Marilyn and John purchased a farm in Green Island, Iowa, where they raised four sons. Marilyn spoke of her family with tremendous pride, sharing stories of love and joy.

Her career was as colorful as her personal life. Marilyn taught junior high and first grade and coached boys’ basketball, which was uncommon for women in her time. A lifelong learner and adventurer, she indulged her curiosity through fossil hunting and even made a groundbreaking discovery: a dinosaur foot.

Throughout her life, Marilyn found strength in her sense of humor, an enduring optimism and a guiding principle she frequently shared—“You can’t be happy without being content.” Even at 103, Marilyn continues to inspire with her zest for life and thoughtful perspective.

Her story serves as a reminder to look beyond a person’s illness and celebrate the humanity and vibrant histories they bring with them. At Compassus, we strive to do just that, creating an environment that feels more like family than care.

As Marilyn celebrated this milestone birthday, one of her parting remarks left a deep impression on everyone: “Will there be a standing ovation with applause when this show closes?” Without hesitation, the answer is yes. From touching the lives of her family and students to sharing unforgettable stories, Marilyn’s legacy is one worthy of applause.

Here’s to Marilyn—a life well-lived and a story worth celebrating.
