Celebrating 20 Years of Compassion – Honoring Chaplain Roger Sheppard

Last month, the Compassus hospice team in Tulsa, OK, came together to celebrate a remarkable milestone — Chaplain Roger Sheppard’s 20-year work anniversary with Compassus.
Roger has been a cornerstone of our hospice program, serving as a steady source of comfort and strength for teammates, patients and families alike. Known for his warmth, humility and humor (often introducing himself as the “temporary chaplain”), Roger has spent two decades living out our mission of providing compassionate care in every moment.
To honor his legacy of service, the team planned a surprise celebration, complete with heartfelt messages, decorations featuring Roger’s signature sayings, and a touching visit from his wife, children and grandchildren. Thanks to the creative planning of Regina Marshall, VC, and Kristal Malveaux, MSW, and a little “fake in-service” ruse to get Roger to the right room, the surprise went off perfectly — and Roger was genuinely moved by the outpouring of appreciation.
Teammates shared how deeply Roger’s care has impacted their lives and those he serves.
“He’s the first to rush to the bedside of an active patient or offer relief after a passing—most days without being asked,” said Brittani Briones, DCS. “Roger has the biggest heart, and it shows in everything he does.”
“There are so many things Roger does quietly, without recognition,” added Regina Marshall, VC. “He lives his life by Matthew 6:1—doing good not to be seen, but because it’s what his heart tells him to do.”
Roger’s presence extends far beyond our team. His deep relationships within the Tulsa community, including local funeral homes, have helped countless families find peace and comfort in their most difficult moments.
As Roger celebrates two decades of service, we are profoundly grateful for his unwavering compassion, spiritual leadership and example of humble kindness. His impact on our Compassus family—and the many families we serve—will be felt for years to come.
At Compassus, our value is in the compassion and expertise of our teams, which act as an extension of patients’ existing care teams. We believe everyone who interacts with us should experience our individualized Care for who I am philosophy, from the care services we provide to patients and families to how we interact with our partners and one another.
