Care Moment: Corvettes And Compassion

In a touching display of community spirit and compassion, the Compassus Hamburg, Pennsylvania hospice program recently collaborated with Todd March, President of the Schuylkill Valley Corvettes Club, to bring happiness to a beloved patient and avid car lover. The event saw former Pottsville Fire Chief Duncan March, who served for 42 years, arriving with his stunning 2019 Corvette Stingray, and he expressed his joy in participating: “It was good for everybody.”

On a bright day, an entourage of eight Corvettes made their way to the Rosewood Nursing Facility in Schuylkill County. Rather than a simple drive-by, the sports cars parked, allowing their drivers to mingle with the overjoyed ‘man of the hour’ and Compassus patient, along with other residents, who relished the chance to see the fancy cars up close and soak up some sun.

Seated nearby in a wheelchair, the patient’s face lit up with joy as he admired the impressive display. Although cognitive limitations prevented him from ever driving a car, he harbored a lifelong passion for American automobiles, especially Corvettes. His sister shared that he was a regular at the Great Pottsville Cruise and frequently visited Jerry’s Classic Cars & Collectibles. He owned many car books throughout his life, was an avid collector of Matchbox toy cars, and always wanted to learn more about sport cars. The patient was beyond surprised and delighted by the experience, his face full of smiles as his sister wheeled him around the vehicles.

This heartwarming event exemplifies the ‘Care for Who I Am’ culture that Compassus strives to uphold. The Hamburg team went above and beyond to fulfill their core values of compassion, integrity, excellence, teamwork, and innovation, bringing immense joy to the patient and his family.
