During National Grief Awareness Month, Compassus recognizes the importance of creating space for people to acknowledge their loss, share what they are experiencing and receive support without judgment. This commitment reflects integrity โ one of the values at the heart of how we care for patients, families and communities.ย
Camp Good Grief in West Branch offers children who have experienced the death of a loved one an opportunity to connect with others who understand what they are going through. With support from Compassus teammates, counselors and volunteers, campers can explore their emotions, remember the people they love and discover healthy ways to express their grief.ย
The impact of that support is not measured by the number of children who attend; it can be seen in the experience of each individual camper.ย
Those moments matter. They help children recognize that they are not alone and that their feelings โwhatever they may be โ are valid.ย
Integrity means meeting people where they areย
For Compassus, integrity means being honest about the realities of grief. Supporting someone after a loss is not about finding the perfect words or trying to take away their pain. It is about listening, being present and following through with care long after others may assume the grieving process has ended.ย
Our bereavement support extends beyond the patients and families directly receiving hospice care. Through programs such as Camp Good Grief, our teammates bring education, connection and compassionate support into the communities we serve.ย
This work also demonstrates the importance of respecting each personโs story. Whether supporting a child at camp or walking alongside a family after the death of a loved one, we honor their experiences with sensitivity, dignity and care.ย
Continuing to show upย
National Grief Awareness Month reminds us that grief deserves to be acknowledgedโnot only immediately following a loss, but throughout the weeks, months and years that follow.ย
As Compassus celebrates 20 years of service, we remain committed to showing up with integrity for people during some of lifeโs most difficult moments. We are grateful for the teammates, counselors and volunteers who make programs such as Camp Good Grief possible and for the families who trust us to be part of their healing journey.ย
If you or someone you know is grieving, remember that support is available. You do not have to navigate loss alone. More resources on grief and grief support can be found here. ย
