Creating Lasting Memories: Compassus Helps a Father Honor His Final Wishes

Mark “Briggs” Goodson, a 45-year-old husband and father to a 5-year-old daughter in Austin, Texas, was diagnosed with metastatic rectal cancer in 2024. Briggs underwent aggressive treatment until chemotherapy became intolerable. During the final stages of his cancer journey, he transitioned from Compassus Kyle Palliative Care and was admitted to Compassus Round Rock Hospice.

Upon admission to hospice, Briggs shared one of his most heartfelt goals: to create lasting memories with his daughter. He spoke of simple yet profound experiences, such as taking her fishing and making s’mores. To help fulfill this wish, a local church generously donated a glamping experience and a fishing boat.

Unfortunately, Briggs’ health declined rapidly, making it impossible for him to go on an outdoor fishing trip. Determined to honor his wishes, the hospice team worked to recreate the experience at home. With the support of the community, the gathering became a celebration of love, joy and togetherness.

Good Vibes Inflatables donated a water slide to bring whimsy to the day, and Austin Home Lens volunteered their photography services to capture the unforgettable moments. Friends and family traveled from Utah to join the celebration, offering support and love. The day was filled with grilled burgers, hot dogs, s’mores, laughter and outdoor fun, creating an atmosphere of unity and connection.

What began as a dream for a fishing trip evolved into something even more meaningful: a demonstration of what it means to honor a patient’s values and wishes. Hospice is not about giving up; it is about meeting patients where they are, focusing on what matters most and helping families create lasting memories.

The experience emphasized the importance of dignity, comfort and connection in the face of terminal illness. Although Briggs’ diagnosis could not be changed, the gathering provided his young daughter with cherished moments she will carry with her forever.

This story underscores the mission of hospice: to support patients and their families with care, compassion and respect during life’s most challenging times. Moments like these reflect the profound impact that hospice care can have, creating a legacy of love and meaning that endures.
