How Nancy Schuller is Paying it Forward

Nancy Schuller

Inspired by the incredible care her family received during her father’s end-of-life journey in 2021, Nancy Schuller began volunteering with Compassus in February 2023. Now serving patients and families in Eagle River and St. Germain, WI, Nancy brings comfort and companionship to those navigating some of life’s most vulnerable moments.

“I know so many people in our area don’t have a nearby support system,” Nancy shared. “I wanted to be part of the solution—for families like mine who might not have someone close when serious health concerns arise.”

Despite being relatively new to the volunteer team, Nancy’s impact has been profound. A former bank officer in Eagle River and an active member on several local boards, Nancy is deeply embedded in her community. Her warmth, empathy and genuine care have touched patients, families and staff alike.

Some of her most cherished memories come from simple, shared moments. Like the sunny afternoon she spent with a patient who had Alzheimer’s. When asked about his favorite day ever, he smiled and said, “The day I met my wife.” Nancy later had the joy of passing that touching sentiment along to his spouse.

Or the time she sat beside a nonverbal patient, holding her hand while listening to Elvis music. When Nancy mentioned having a poster of Elvis as a girl, the woman squeezed her hand, smiled, and said, “I had a crush on him too!” That spark of connection is the essence of hospice care.

“Hospice can be joyful,” Nancy says. “Patients often need someone to talk to—someone outside the family, someone who listens without judgment. It’s a gift to be that person.”

Her message is clear: We all have something to give. Whether it’s time, talent or a listening ear, every act of service helps build a more resilient and compassionate community. Thank you, Nancy, for the light you bring and the difference you make every day.
