James takes pride in the critical role his team plays in keeping Compassus functioning smoothly. The IT support desk serves as the first line of defense for nearly every type of issue, including 24/7 on-call support. One defining moment in Jamesโ€™ career occurred during an after-hours crisis when the main answering service that handles calls outside of business hours went down. As the on-call technician, James experienced firsthand the seamless teamwork that Compassus embodies. โ€œNot only did the support desk rally, but hardware specialists and administrators all came together,โ€ James said. โ€œI was very proud to see us all working in the middle of the night to ensure on-call nurses and other staff could still support our patients without too much disruption.โ€

For James, the heart of his work lies in meaningful interactions with his colleagues. He strives to be a kind and calming presence when technology challenges arise, ensuring those who reach out for help feel supported and heard.

โ€œTechnology is stressful, especially when it fails,โ€ he said. โ€œA kind person who answers the phone to help makes a big difference. When I get off a call and hear the gratitude or relief in someoneโ€™s voice, that makes a difference. You can hear their smile, and it means everything.โ€

Teamwork is at the core of Jamesโ€™ daily experience. He finds fulfillment not only in solving issues himself but in collaborating and sharing knowledge with colleagues to ensure the best outcomes for everyone.

โ€œBeing there for people, whether itโ€™s the desk team or other departments, really makes my day,โ€ he said. โ€œWhen I find a solution to something that others have been struggling with, I share it. And when someone shares a fix with me, I try to spread that knowledge to others. Thatโ€™s what teamwork and integrity are all about.โ€

James credits Compassus with helping him grow, both personally and professionally, describing the organization as a family that continues to teach him something new every day. Even on the most challenging days, he finds motivation in knowing his work makes a tangible difference for the caregivers and patients Compassus serves.

โ€œIn IT, thereโ€™s a new challenge every day,โ€ he said. โ€œSometimes itโ€™s hard, but you dig in and fix it. Itโ€™s funny how often I answer a call with someone saying, โ€˜Iโ€™m so sorry to waste your time.โ€™ My response is always, โ€˜Donโ€™t worry, they pay me!โ€™ It usually gets a laugh and helps them relax. In that moment, Iโ€™m working for them, and I want them to know theyโ€™re not a burden.โ€

James views his role as a vital part of Compassusโ€™ larger mission to provide compassionate care. Supporting the staff who care for patients, especially in hospice where the emotional toll can be significant, is a source of pride and purpose for him. โ€œHealth care, and especially hospice, is a job not many people can do,โ€ he said. โ€œI help make sure the tools they need donโ€™t weigh them down by not working.โ€

Over his long career in IT, including roles in hospitals, a medical school and hospice care, James has developed countless meaningful connections with coworkers. These relationships, built on support and trust, serve as a reminder of why his work matters. โ€œThere arenโ€™t just one or two stories that stand out,โ€ he said. โ€œThere are so many people I interact with daily who feel more like friends than clients. I try to ensure that everyone I help hangs up the phone feeling less alone in the often-intimidating world of IT. Thatโ€™s why I do this.โ€

Compassusโ€™ larger goals of compassionate care and collaboration resonate deeply with James, who is proud not only of his work but of the incredible people he works alongside. โ€œWe get calls about everything โ€“ from broken tablets to locked doors to even a toilet that wouldnโ€™t flush at an inpatient unit,โ€ he said with a laugh. โ€œOur team can fix anything or find someone who can. Itโ€™s not just my work; itโ€™s the work of the whole team coming together every day to learn, grow, and support the organization.โ€

Through nearly 30 years in health care IT, James considers Compassus the most caring organization heโ€™s worked for. โ€œThe people at Compassus truly want you to succeed,โ€ he said. โ€œI am proud to work alongside the most compassionate people Iโ€™ve ever met, and I learn from them every day.โ€
