Cooling with Compassion: A Team Effort in Moline

We talk a lot about the strength of our interdisciplinary team at Compassus—a group of professionals from different specialties who collaborate to support the whole patient—but in Moline, IL, that strength turned into swift, life-changing action. Â
During a routine hospice visit, Ari Walters, one of our devoted Hospice Aides, discovered that a patient was without air conditioning during dangerously high summer heat. The patient shared that the heat was making him feel physically ill. Ari knew this wasn’t something that could wait—so she took action.Â
She immediately contacted Carri Amador, the team’s Social Worker, who jumped into problem-solving mode. Carri reached out to Amanda Vesey, the Team Coordinator, who contacted the apartment building manager to determine what type of unit would be compatible. Once they had that information, Amanda found a match at Menards and placed the order.Â
Carri then called on Chaplain Roger Carlson, who picked up the air conditioner and personally accompanied Carri to the patient’s home. Together, they installed the unit—ensuring the patient could finally rest in a safe, cool environment.Â
This entire act of care, collaboration and compassion happened within just four hours.Â
The next morning, Ari returned to help the patient with his bath. He smiled and shared how much better he already felt thanks to the cooler air—and the warmth of his Compassus care team.Â
This is what it means to be part of an interdisciplinary team. Every role matters. Every action adds up. And when we lead with heart, our patients feel it.Â
Thank you to Ari, Amanda, Carri, and Roger for going above and beyond. You are the heart of Compassus.Â
At Compassus, our value is in the compassion and expertise of our teams, which act as an extension of patients’ existing care teams. We believe everyone who interacts with us should experience our individualized Care for who I am philosophy, from the care services we provide to patients and families to how we interact with our partners and one another.
