A Final Act of Compassion

A Final Act of Compassion

Nurse, brush and senior patient with hairstyle for self care, grooming or morning routine at assisted living. Healthcare, retirement home and caregiver help elderly woman with beauty treatment.

Becky Splitstone, Hospice Licensed Practical Nurse with Mercy Health Hospice of the Valley by Compassus in Youngstown, OH, arrived to assist a patient who had fallen. What began as a simple lift assist became a powerful moment of compassion and dignity.

As the fire department helped stabilize the patient, her husband shared how his wife always took pride in looking her best—hair styled, makeup done and dressed beautifully every day. Touched by his words, Becky took the time to gently clean up the patient, help her into a nice outfit her family had chosen, and lovingly fix her hair and makeup.

Shortly after, the patient passed away.

Days later, her husband called to express his deep gratitude for Becky’s kindness. He shared that her thoughtful care brought dignity and peace to his wife’s final moments—and comfort to their family in a time of great loss.

At Mercy Health Hospice of the Valley by Compassus, we are honored to have caregivers like Becky who embody our values of compassion, integrity, excellence and teamwork through every act of care.

At Compassus, our value is in the compassion and expertise of our teams, which act as an extension of patients’ existing care teams. We believe everyone who interacts with us should experience our individualized Care for who I am philosophy, from the care services we provide to patients and families to how we interact with our partners and one another.
