Creating Valentine's Day Memories in Hospice Care
At Compassus, our mission goes beyond providing medical care; we focus on creating meaningful moments that bring joy and connection to our patients and their families. One such moment unfolded at Providence Place in Pottsville, Pennsylvania, during a special Valentine’s Day luncheon for three of our hospice patients and their spouses. The event was a testament to the love, compassion and teamwork that define hospice care.
Each couple was welcomed to their own intimate dining table, draped in elegant linens and adorned with fresh floral centerpieces. The ambiance was set with a glass of sparkling rosé for each guest and the soft melodies of romantic music playing in the background. The meal featured a carefully curated menu of Italian wedding soup, salad, and spaghetti and meatballs, topped off with decadent red velvet cupcakes for dessert.
The room was alive with smiles, laughter and shared stories. For a brief moment, the challenges of life melted away as these couples focused on one another. A particularly heartwarming highlight was Elmer and his wife, Sandy, who shared a dance together — a cherished and tender moment that touched everyone in attendance.
At the close of the afternoon, each couple posed for a photo in front of a Valentine’s Day backdrop, capturing the memory of the day forever. They also left with a keepsake: a vase of fresh flowers and a single rose as a token of the love-filled celebration. The gratitude expressed by these couples was overwhelming, and their heartfelt thanks reminded us of the power of simple joys during life’s most challenging seasons.
This event was more than just a luncheon; it was a true team effort. Teammates Danielle Wychulis, Ashley Vigoda, Tammie Grube and Rachel Karcher meticulously planned every detail, with dedicated volunteer Cathy Clauser ensuring the event felt like dining in an elegant restaurant. We are also grateful for our dedicated volunteer, Cathy, whose time and effort ensured the couples felt as though they were dining at an elegant restaurant.
Being part of this experience was a profound reminder of why we do what we do. It’s an honor and privilege to serve our hospice patients and their families, creating moments of connection and joy that will be cherished for years to come.
To everyone involved: thank you for the compassion, creativity, and care you bring to our patients every day. You exemplify what it means to provide care for the whole person — mind, body and spirit — and your efforts make a difference in ways words cannot fully capture.
