For 25 years, Guy Jones has devoted himself to caring for others with sincerity, compassion and skill. Today, as a Compassus Inpatient Unit Hospice Aide in Payson, AZ, Guy brings those same values to every meal he prepares and every patient he supports. His warmth and dedication remind us that hospice care is about more than comfort—it’s about connection.
Q: What personal values drive you in your role, and how does your work align with those values?
A: Being genuine and having sincerity for patient care at any level. Patients may be going through the most difficult time of their lives, and they need to believe in every member of the team. That trust builds confidence and creates positive experiences for everyone involved.
Q: What was the defining moment that made you feel proud to be a part of this team or field?
A: When our inpatient unit received a 100% pass with no discrepancies and when Compassus was recognized among Newsweek’s America’s Greatest Workplaces 2025. Those achievements showed me what a committed team can achieve together.
Q: How do you feel your work makes a difference for the people we serve or the team around you?
A: As a licensed kitchen manager, I take pride in providing great quality meals and treats for our patients, families and staff. The team at Payson Hopsice has supported me in creating a kitchen that feels like home—and that means a lot to the people we serve.
Q: What part of your job gives you the most fulfillment? Why?
A: The social and emotional support we offer. When you can truly empathize with a patient, it brings about healing. And even when empathy isn’t possible, sympathy always is. Everyone who chooses this role carries that within them.
Q: What one story or interaction reminds you why you’re here?
A: Sylvia—a 96-year-old German Holocaust survivor. We spent time together and exchanged letters until her passing. She reminded me that one person’s attention can turn negatives into positives. Hospice teaches us that we only pass over one day out of our whole lives—we get to live through all the others. That truth has stayed with me.
Q: How has working here helped you grow or develop, personally or professionally?
A: Working with Compassus reminds me how important it is to make the most of each day—to be present for those who love us and to embrace the things that bring us joy without regret.
Q: What motivates you to keep coming back, even on challenging days?
A: Being depended upon. The personal responsibility that comes with caring for this vulnerable population motivates me every day. I like making a difference.
Thank you, Guy, for sharing your story and for the compassion, creativity and care you bring to the Compassus team in Payson.
