FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Compassus, a nationwide network of community-based hospice, palliative and home health programs, announced it has established the Carlos Burruel Compassus Core Values Award in honor of a colleague who lost his year-long battle with cancer on December 13, 2016. Flagstaff resident Carlos Burruel served as a Compassus regional director of sales for more than two years.
“Carlos epitomized the living of our values – compassion, integrity and excellence,” said Jim Deal, CEO of Compassus, as he announced creation of the new award. “Although modest of stature, Carlos was large of presence. He set the bar for the rest of us, and it’s only fitting that we present the first award to Carlos himself.”
Burruel’s wife Emmy and three children, Alyssa, Bryan and Michelle, accepted the award in his behalf at an awards ceremony during the Compassus National Leadership Meeting in Nashville, Tennessee, earlier this month.
The award will be presented annually going forward to a Compassus colleague “in recognition of a personal and professional character and heart imbued with compassion, integrity and excellence, evidenced in every interaction with patients, families and colleagues, and worthy of universal admiration and respect.”
“On behalf of my whole family, my children and myself, I would like to thank the Compassus family for bestowing such an honor in Carlos’ name,” expressed Mrs. Burruel as she accepted the award with her children by her side. “Many months before his passing, Carlos instructed me that if the need should ever come, that I would seek out the Compassus family as he knew that his remaining time with us would be entrusted into loving hands with the utmost respect, integrity, dignity and compassion any patient facing limited time would appreciate.”
