WATERLOO, Iowa – The Compassus program serving Cedar Falls hosted a “Coffee with a Veteran” event on Monday, November 12, at ManorCare Health Services in Waterloo, Iowa. This special event, held in conjunction with the observance of Veterans Day, offered community members the opportunity to hear stories from local veterans about their time in the service.
University of Northern Illinois Reserve Officer Training Corps volunteers presented a color guard ceremony, performed the Star Spangled Banner and held coffee table discussions with patients, families and guests. Each of the 14 veterans in attendance also received a specially designed coffee cup.
“At Compassus, we find it extremely important to recognize a veteran patient’s service and the meaning of that service to their life,” said Patricia Christy, executive director of Compassus – Cedar Falls. “This was an opportunity for us to celebrate our nation’s heroes around Veterans Day, but we also believe in honoring them every day by providing them with the support, comfort and respect they deserve.”
