Compassus – Dresher Recognizes Local Volunteer

DRESHER, Pa. – The Compassus program serving Bucks, Montgomery and Philadelphia Counties is proud to recognize Mike Heck and all hospice volunteers during National Volunteer Week April 10-16 for providing companionship, support and dignity to hospice patients and their loved ones. For more than six years, Heck and his pet therapy dog, a Labrador named Abby, have traveled to visit Compassus patients.

“We are proud to recognize Mike for his efforts to honor life and offer hope to individuals facing life-limiting illnesses by supporting them with compassion, integrity and excellence,” said Shaun Antrim, volunteer coordinator for Compassus – Dresher. “His positive attitude and contributions make him an integral member of our team, and we are fortunate to have him as a volunteer.”

“Our program covers three counties, but Mike is willing to see a myriad of patients on a weekly basis in all different directions, and at times at the last minute,” said Shaun Antrim, volunteer coordinator for Compassus — Dresher. “During his visits, he and Abby will sit with patients to provide a comforting presence. His dedication to our patients makes him an integral part of our team, and we are fortunate to have both him and Abby as volunteers.”

“Volunteers help make our mission a reality here at Compassus,” said Abigail Kerrigan, volunteer coordinator for Compassus – Dresher. “Mike and Abby are truly a team and bring so much joy to our patients and their families. I want to thank Mike and all of the volunteers on our team for their true dedication to those we serve.”

According to the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization, there are an estimated 400,000 trained hospice volunteers providing more than 19 million hours of service to hospice programs each year. Hospice volunteers add to the care provided by physicians and other hospice staff by bringing companionship to people in the final months and weeks of life, providing respite to families and caregivers, and supporting the administrative responsibilities of hospice programs.
