HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The Compassus program serving Huntsville and the surrounding areas is proud to recognize Stephen Sparks and all hospice volunteers during National Volunteer Week April 23-29 for providing companionship, support and dignity to hospice patients and their loved ones.
A retired pastor and hospice chaplain, Sparks now volunteers his time to visit Compassus patients and families, using his sense of humor to spread cheer. He also started an Alzheimer’s disease support group at the Brookdale Personal Care Home in Hampton Cove, Alabama, and is currently assisting five patients with writing life journals to give as gifts to their families. Sparks has been volunteering at Compassus since September 2014.
“We are proud to recognize Stephen for his efforts to honor life and offer hope to individuals facing life-limiting illnesses by supporting them with compassion, integrity and excellence,” said Darla Fisher, executive director for Compassus – Huntsville. “Volunteers like Stephen help make our mission a reality here at Compassus, and we are fortunate to have him as a part of our care team.”
“Whether simply providing companionship or a listening presence, volunteers make a meaningful impact on our patients and their families,” said Lilian Sparks, volunteer coordinator for Compassus – Huntsville. “I want to thank Stephen and all of the volunteers on our team for their true dedication to those we serve.”
According to the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization, there are an estimated 400,000 trained hospice volunteers providing more than 19 million hours of service to hospice programs each year. Hospice volunteers add to the care provided by physicians and other hospice staff by bringing companionship to people in the final months and weeks of life, providing respite to families and caregivers, and supporting the administrative responsibilities of hospice programs.
